Looking down on New York Avenue

On Sunday, I was invited to paint with a group from the roof of a building right next door to the White House. In this view, I was looking down New York Avenue with its fascinating combination of modern and early 20th century architecture.
Sketch - the view from our balcony

On a recent warm day, I sat on the balcony and sketched the view below. In one of my current classes, I am teaching the pleasure of keeping a sketchbook. It's a private record and there is no obligation to show your work to anyone unless you choose to. This gives you the freedom to work without pressure whenever and wherever you like. What could be better?
Spring is Plein Air Sketch Time

With
the weather improving, its time to go out and enjoy nature. I love sketching on-site with simple, portable supplies.
What I take -
- 5" x 8" watercolor sketchbook. There are many on the market, but I prefer one with a spiral binding because it sits open on my lap so nicely.
- In a quart-size zip-lock bag, a travel-size watercolor kit, one or two brushes, a waterproof pen, a pencil, a kneaded eraser, and a small container for water. I don't carry water unless I know it won't be available.
- A pocket camera

With such minimal supplies, I can enjoy myself, paint a while, visit a restaurant or museum, and I am not burdened with heavy, cumbersome equipment. If I am not able to complete a sketch on the spot, I can take a snapshot and finish up later.
If you are interested in learning to create your own sketchbook diary, join me in Spain in September. You'll find details under the Classes and Workshops tab.
